.ics files on iPhone/iPad (Calendars - Part 2)

One of the rumoured new features in iOS 4.2 is support for .ics event files. This will mean that I can (finally) accept calendar invitations that arrive in my IMAP email from Outlook users.

However, today it doesn't work and I need it to. Fortunately, someone has created a simple "kludge" iPhone app called Calendar Happy. The only downside is that it doesn't work on my iPad and it costs £1.79 - but as I said, I need it now.

Again all I can say is roll-on iOS 4.2.

Calendars

I've recently started work at a new company and it has become apparent to me how dependant I had become on the Outlook calendar (sync'd with my iPhone) that I had at my old company.

The new company is a small start up and we don't have luxuries like Microsoft Exchange (and probably don't want them either), but it has left me with a problem over the last month due to the lack of a calendar.  I had some (very simple - I thought) requirements:

  • I need to be able to have separate work and home calendars

  • I need to be able to access (read and write) on my iPhone

  • I need to be able to access (read and write) on my iPad

  • I need it to integrate (read and write) into a Windows mail program

  • I need it to integrate (read and write) into a Linux mail program

  • I need to be able to access (read and write) the calendar online

  • I don't want to pay anything

I have spent a lot of time searching online and couldn't find a solution that met all of my requirements.  But today I have (almost) found one.  Given the number of people who seem to have the same issue I thought it probably worth sharing.

The Calendar

I had hoped to use my MobileMe calendar.  It supports creating multiple calendars and it works well with my iPhone and iPad.  Unfortunately, using this under Windows and Linux with up-to-date, free, software proved a non-starter.  For example, MobileMe does have a CalDav server but the only (up-to-date and free) Windows and Linux mail software I can find with CalDav support is Thunderbird with the Lightning plugin.  Unfortunately for me, that plugin doesn't seem to want to do authentication with MobileMe.

Google Calendar came to my rescue.  Here is what I did:

  1. I created a Google account for my work email address and set-up a "work" calendar and set the week start, event display, and notification preferences to suit my tastes

  2. I created a Google account for my home email address and set-up a "home" calendar and set the week start, event display, and notification preferences to suit my tastes

  3. I then gave my work Google account full access to my "home" calendar and vice-versa

  4. I also added the "UK Holidays" calendar to both

  5. I set the calendar colours for the three calendars so as not to clash

I suppose the main questions people might ask about the above are:

  • Why not just create two calendars on one google account?

  • Why not just create two calendars associated with your Gmail account?

Well, I want calendar emails relating to my "work" calendar to go to my work email address and emails relating to my "home" calendar to my home email address.  I did try creating two calendars on one account, but the calendar emails only went to the primary email address for the account.  Google is even clever enough to work out that both accounts belong to the same person so both calendars appear together in the "My calendars" section of the display ("UK Holidays" remains, correctly, in the "Other calendars" section).

The Linux and Windows Software

Once I had selected Google Calendar this part was easy.  I installed Mozilla Thunderbird, the Lightning calendar extension, and the Provider for Google Calendar extension.

I then set-up Thunderbird to handle my email, and "work" and "home" calendars.  Thunderbird is available for both Linux and Windows.  I even added in the "UK holidays" calendar and adjusted the colours to give myself a consistent view between Thunderbird and the Google Calendar website.

iPhone

[update 31/10/2010: I found an alternative (and possibly better) way to sync the calendars on my iPhone.  See the comments below.]

I already have email working on my iPhone so all I had to do was get both calendars on there.  My first instinct was to add them as Gmail accounts as, if you are using Gmail for email, you can also sync with a Google Calendar.  This does not work.  When you add a Gmail account is tries to log into Gmail with IMAP and this failed because my home and work Google accounts do not have Gmail enabled.

Luckily (again) there is an alternative.  You can configure the iPhone to use Google Mobile Sync.  This involves creating a Microsoft Exchange (this is no joke) account for each calendar.  Use the email address and password you use to log into Google for authentication, when given the chance to specify a server use "m.google.com", and make sure that when you choose which services to use (calendar, contacts, and mail) you just choose calendar.

I also subscribed to the iCal version of Google's "UK Holidays" calendar.

iPad

[update 31/10/2010: I found an alternative (and possibly better) way to sync the calendars on my iPad.  See the comments below.]

This is the (almost) bit.  In theory this is set-up in exactly the same way as the iPhone.  In practice my iPhone is running iOS 4.1 but my iPad is running iOS 3.2.2.  The difference here is that iOS 4.x lets you have more than one Microsoft Exchange account, but iOS 3.x does not.   All I can say is roll-on iOS 4.2 (due sometime in the next month) and I will be able to meet all of the requirements I specified above.

In the meantime I need to decide which calendar I want to view on my iPad.

Updated CV

A wise man once told me (in fact several have told me) that you should always have an up-to-date CV.

It's good advice so, given that my job (and job title) has changed recently, I thought it was time to update mine.  If anyone is interested my new CV is here: http://blog.dunkley.me.uk/files/cv/cv.pdf.

I also (recently) took the trouble to update my LinkedIn profile: http://www.linkedin.com/in/pdunkley.

My new job (Crocodile RCS)

It's been a while since I wrote anything here.  This is mainly due to the fact that I rarely feel I have anything of interest that is worth sharing with the world.  However, in the unlikely event anyone bothers to read this, I thought I should mention that I have just finished the second week at my new job.  This is a big thing for me as I had been working for my previous employer (Telsis Ltd) for over ten years and it was my first job since graduating from university.

I am now working for a start-up company called Crocodile RCS Ltd (http://www.crocodile-rcs.com/ for those interested in what it does).  The first week at my new job was nothing short of hectic as it began with a 4am wake up call (a taxi to Heathrow airport collected me at 5am) on Monday and ended after 12:30am on Saturday (a taxi from Heathrow airport dropped me off).  On the plus side I got to add another country and city (Russia and Moscow) to my long list of work sponsored "holidays".

While less hectic than the first week my second week has been nothing short of busy.  While not (yet?) working the ridiculous hours you sometimes hear associated with start-ups the days have still been quite long, and the stunning part has been how quickly they seem to go by.  The best part, from my point-of-view (I admit I am a glutton for punishment), is that there is so much needing done that it is simply not possible to get everything needed done completed each day.  Of course this means there is a lot of prioritising going on, but it does have the upshot of meaning I never get a chance to be bored.

iPad (WiFi) and Three MiFi

I have now had an iPad for five days. I decided not to buy the 3G version and instead bought a MiFi from Three. I think this is a great combination:

  • The MiFi takes a more common SIM size. This makes it easier to move between networks both at home and when travelling.

  • The MiFi can be used with anything that supports WiFi. This not only means I can use it with my notebook, but it also means I can use it for "cheap" data on my iPhone while roaming.

The one problem I have with the MiFi is the limited battery life, but then I found a Philips Rechargeable Powerpack (SCE4420/10) on sale at Tesco (for £10). With the battery pack in place it now outlasts the iPad.

The pre-pay MiFi, having the MiFi unlocked, and the powerpack cost £75 in total. This means only a £25 saving over the additional cost for 3G iPad, but, as explained above, it is a much more flexible solution.

The only regret I have about the iPad (so far) is that I bought the dock. This was a waste of money:

  • I also bought the case which is a perfectly functional stand - in fact the case is a better stand than the dock as it can be used in both landscape and portrait modes.

  • The case is a tight fit making it a pain to take off just to use the dock.

Incidently, I also bought the Apple Bluetooth Keyboard. This was worth every penny and (based on my dislike of the ordinary dock) a better choice for me than the iPad keyboard dock.

Ordered a new gadget: Three pay-as-you-go MiFi

Why?

It's actually quite simple.  I have an iPhone, a notebook, and will (almost) certainly buy an iPad as soon as they are available in the UK.  I currently get mobile Internet on the iPhone, but on nothing else.  I want a way to get mobile Internet on my notebook, and, when I have it, my iPad.

I can use tethering on my iPhone for the notebook, but I resent the idea of paying an extra £10/month to O2 when my contract says "unlimited" anyway (if there was a pay-as-you-go tethering option I'd be sorely tempted just for simplicities sake).  Besides, it was confirmed recently that the iPad will not tether with an iPhone, so to get mobile Internet on that device I'd still need a (more expensive) 3G version and a second mobile account.  That'd mean:

  • £35/month for my iPhone, plus

  • £10/month for iPhone tethering, plus

  • whatever the iPad connectivity will cost per month, plus

  • a one-off of whatever the UK equivalent of Apple's $130 more for the iPad 3G version

I could get a (free/cheap) 3G USB dongle for my laptop, but that'd still mean having to get a 3G iPad and then I'd end up with three mobile accounts (four if you count my company mobile).  That seems a little excessive to me.

Alternatively, by getting the MiFi I'll pay:

  • £35/month for my iPhone, plus

  • £10 (for 1Gb), £15 (3Gb), or £25 (7Gb), plus

  • a one-off of £49.99 for the MiFi

So with the MiFi it is much cheaper (assuming I don't use the mobile Internet excessively on iPad or notebook) and there is no additional monthly contract.  I know the minimum term with O2 tethering is just 30 days, but you still need to remember to call up and turn it off and on.  However, if I connect the Internet with the MiFi and have no pre-pay credit left I can still access the Three top-up website - this is much simpler.

Looking at my iPhone 3G data usage I doubt I will even get close to 1Gb a month on the iPad and my notebook mobile Internet will only be occasional (another prime reason I don't want a contract), so the MiFi should definitely work out considerably cheaper.

This still leaves me with three mobile accounts (including my company phone) which is still ridiculous.  But, until we live in a fair and sensible world (by that I mean one where O2 isn't ripping off their (unlimited data) iPhone customers with their tethering charges, and Apple produces mobile devices that interwork with each other in an obvious way), it's the best combination I can find.

Recipe: Tablet

One of my favourite sweets is tablet. Tablet is an extremely unhealthy, traditional Scottish, sweet which is made from butter, milk, and sugar.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup of milk

  • 1/2 cup of water

  • 4 oz of butter

  • 2 lb of granulated sugar

  • 1 large tin of condensed milk

  • Vanilla essence or extract

Method

  1. Put the milk, water, and butter into a thick bottomed pan and heat gently until the butter has melted.

  2. Add the sugar and continue to heat gently until the sugar has melted and then bring to the boil.

  3. Boil the mixture for five minutes (gently stir continuously to prevent the mixture from burning).

  4. Add the condensed milk and boil for 10 to 15 minutes (continuing to stir).  I find the mixture is usually ready between 12 and 13 minutes - but you can boil for a little longer if you prefer a darker colour.

  5. Remove from the heat, add a little of the vanilla, and beat the mixture for approximately five minutes until it thickens.

  6. Pour the mixture out into a greased Swiss-roll tin or baking sheet.

  7. Once set you can turn the tablet out of the tin and break into pieces (you may find it easier to break if you mark the pieces out with a sharp knife before the tablet has fully set).

Sorting out the home office

Today I have been sorting out my home office (second bedroom).  I now have a much bigger, nicer, sturdier desk (old dining table - the new one arrives next week) and I can now put both my desktop monitor and my laptop next to each other.

The excellent Synergy program will let me use the desktop keyboard and mouse with both the desktop and laptop at the same time - but there is a catch.

Both of my computers are running Vista and the catch is this; when running Vista the UAC feature sometimes kicks in when you run an application and Synergy locks up.  The way around this is to modify the Synergy short-cut to run Synergy as an Administrator.  However, as I want Synergy to run automatically when I log in this causes another problem because that will trigger the UAC pop-up.

I do not want to disable UAC but I find this behaviour incredibly annoying.  Fortunately, I have found a workaround.  You can create a scheduled task under Vista which does not run automatically but can be run manually.  This task can be set to run at a high privilege level without UAC kicking in and you can create a short-cut to run this as a command.  Detailed instructions on using scheduled tasks to bypass UAC can be found here.

Testing some more

This should appear in Twitter with a shortened URL...

Moved to MobileMe and upgraded Blog

Right...

Last night I bit the bullet and decided to move my email and gallery (still to do) over to MobileMe. It looks like an interesting service - the only problem being the hoops I had to jump through to get email to appear to come from my pre-existing email address. Unfortunately, I still can't email sent from the MobileMe website using that pre-existing address - if Apple would sort this out the service would be far more appealing.

I saw a number of people online trying to get MobileMe to work with a custom email address. Just in-case anyone is interested, here is what I did:

  1. Find yourself a host for your domain that will forward your incoming email to your "@me.com" address (I already have a DreamHost account).

  2. Find yourself a host that will let you send outbound (SMTP) email with any "From:" address (I already have a DreamHost account and just set up a "dummy" email account for authenticating with.

  3. When setting up email on your computer use your custom email address as the "From:" address, the normal MobileMe settings for the inbound server, and the configuration for the host in step 2 (above) for the outbound settings.

  4. When setting up MobileMe on your iPhone disable the Mail option in the MobileMe account and add an "Other" (specifically IMAP) account for your MobileMe mail.  Configure it in the same way as you did for your computer in step 3 (above).

There is one disadvantage I have found here, which is that "Push" email won't work to the iPhone.  I set up "Fetch" at a "15 minute" interval instead - I can live with this if it means emails I send come from the address I want them to.

Other geeky things I did last night were:

  • Remove my old gallery site - MobileMe gallery coming soon.

  • Updated WordPress to the latest version.

  • Update the WordPress "Twitter Tools" plugin - which means a link to this blog post should appear in my Twitter and Facebook accounts.
